As a user of mostly console gaming (and have little experience with PC gaming) I am more likely to stick with the current and reliable consoles by companies which have developed their consoles over a longer period of time.

Since I generally play most of my games on PC, I do prefer the features and layout of steam, but changing from using a keyboard and mouse to a controller to play the same games does put me off a little from purchasing the console

theres one thing I think is a cool feature about steam machines is the ability to stream games from your other computer to the steam machine which means if I was to buy one I would only need a cheap version.

I do like that valve gives you a choice of a vast variety of consoles, though im hoping that this does not effect if games can only run on certain consoles

oh and that the console supports over 200 games for itself and is planning to support more in the future

a big problem I can see is optimising games for the console. for example Microsoft really only has one xbox, so the games are designed to fit perfectly for the console where as there is a few steam machines which could cause problems with possibly all consoles running games at the same settings where the higher tier versions are working the same as the cheaper versions

The purpose of a steam machine is to extend steam's market to the "couch dwellers", who generally only have laptops. They don't own a desktop PC, seriously.
The steam machine is pricey versus a console, but it gives access to a ridiculously large library of affordable games.
Many of these games are on consoles as well, but they cost 3x versus the steam Christmas sale price.
